DRL Assemblies

DRLs or Daytime Running Lights are a relatively new feature on vehicles. These lights are located at the front of a vehicle and remain on while the engine is running. Daytime running lights are fairly dim compared to headlights and do not illuminate the road ahead. Daytime running lights are fairly dim compared to headlights. Although they can light up the area directly in front of your vehicles, they do not illuminate the road ahead. The main purpose of daytime running lights is to enhance the visibility of your car for other drivers during the day. When you are driving at night, your headlights and tail lights are also turned on, which makes it easier for other drivers to see you. But during the day, you don’t keep the headlights on. It may not be easy for others to spot your vehicle quickly, especially when it is cloudy or foggy.

History of DRLs

DRLs have been around for a long time. They were originally introduced in the 1970s as a safety measure. In recent years their popularity and usefulness have really caught on with more and more drivers opting for DRLs for urban and off-road driving. DRLs have become quite common in countries located in the northern hemisphere where days are short, and there is limited light during the day. Drivers required better visibility without the need to turn their headlights on for long periods. That is where DRLs found the most use. Countries such as Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, and Canada were the first where DRLs became mandatory on all vehicles. Multiple studies conducted in these countries over the decades have shown that the addition of daytime running lights significantly reduces accidents. DRLs were not very popular in countries around the equator. Several US states banned the use of DRLs entirely because they caused a glare that did more harm than good for other drivers. In the 1990s, General Motors pushed to include DRLs on all vehicles in the US because of their usefulness. This met with resistance at first, but eventually, the state government allowed cars with DRLs, and they were particularly preferred for driving on the highways.

Benefits of DRLs

Summary of the advantages: Better vehicle visibility and perception by other road users. Gives other drivers more time to react. DRLs don’t consume as much power as headlights, so you can keep them on longer. DRLs can be programmed to switch on automatically when you start the vehicle without the need for switching them on. LED-based DRLs can last for years without the need for replacement.

DRL Safety Concerns

DRLs are fairly simple to understand. They are powerful enough to light up during the daytime. It is hard to argue against their use in vehicles, yet some do. There are anti-DRL groups who lobby against their usage, which is why they were banned in several states for years. The main argument put forth is that they are not effective or not necessary. Another argument is that they reduce safety and cause glare at night. The very bright DRL lights could potentially blind other drivers. In theory, DRLs are supposed to be dimmer compared to headlights, but this isn’t always the case. Another issue is that DRLs on larger vehicles are likely to be placed higher up. This could cause them to shine directly into the eyes of other drivers and blind them momentarily. We won’t weigh in on the subject. It is possible that DRLs are not really effective in areas that get a lot of bright sunshine during the day. However, there is little evidence to show that they are actually harmful. Canada has mandated all new vehicles to have DRLs installed since 1989, and drivers who do not use them are penalized.
