Choosing the Right HID Bulbs for Your Headlights
A lot of folks assume that any brighter aftermarket bulb is basically the same thing, or that dropping in an HID means it just clicks into your factory socket like a halogen swap. It does not work that way. An HID bulb fires an electric arc through xenon gas and metal salts rather than heating a filament, and the ballast has to convert vehicle power into a roughly 23,000 volt spark to fire that arc. Because the ballast is too big to fit inside most headlight housings, the wiring has to pass through the housing on a grommet, so the install is a little more involved than a straight bulb-for-bulb swap.
In practice, that extra complexity is exactly why HID setups can outlast and outperform the stock halogen they replace, as long as you match the bulb size and beam type to what your headlight actually calls for.
What we have seen in testing: HID bulbs typically run around 5,000 hours of service life, roughly ten times longer than a halogen bulb under the same conditions. That said, HID output does fade gradually over that span rather than failing all at once, so a headlight that still "works" may already be putting out noticeably less light than it did when new. If your drive is mostly at night, that slow fade is worth paying attention to.
Some vehicles use a single-beam HID bulb for just high or low beam, while others use a dual-beam bulb like 9004, H13, or H4 that handles both, and that difference changes what wiring and ballast setup you need. If you are not sure which your headlight takes, our HID Systems page walks through the full kit side of things, ballast included.
Bottom line, if you already know your bulb size and your headlight is wired for a single beam, an HID bulb upgrade can be straightforward. But if you are not sure whether your housing takes a single or dual beam bulb, or whether your vehicle came with HID from the factory, I would start with the size and system details before buying. From there you can also compare against LED Bulbs or Halogen Bulbs if you are weighing options, and check Bulb Sizes if you need to confirm fitment first.
