Find the Right Headlight Bulbs for Your Vehicle
Stock headlights rarely give you enough light once the sun goes down, and picking a replacement bulb only gets more confusing once halogen, HID, and LED all start looking like reasonable options. The real work is matching a bulb to your exact socket and mounting style, not just picking whatever is brightest on a box. Get that part right and the bulb locks in, aims correctly, and actually works the first time.
Here is a common mix-up we see on late model Ram trucks. If you have a 2013-2018 Ram with projector headlights, your low beam bulb is a 9012. If you have a 2009-2018 Ram with reflector headlights, your low beam bulb is an H11. On both trucks, the high beam is a 9005. Here is the part that trips people up: the 9005, 9006, 9012, and H10 bulbs all use the same wiring connector, so a 9005-style relay harness works for all of them, even if the label does not match your bulb size exactly. The bulbs themselves are not interchangeable, though. A 9012 bulb has bigger mounting tabs than a 9005, and those tabs need to line up with the notches in your headlight housing. Put the wrong bulb in and it will not sit right. It can wobble, twist to the wrong angle, or just refuse to lock into place.
So before you compare brightness or color temperature, confirm the physical bulb your headlight actually takes. The connectors can fool you: a 9006 and a 9012 have identical connectors and the same o-ring diameter, but the three plastic mounting tabs are different. I would start with Bulb Sizes to nail that down first, then decide how bright you want to go from there.
