Wire Taps and Wiring Tools for Lighting Installs
A single HD T-Tap is rated for 10A at 300V on 24-18 gauge wire, which sounds like plenty until you realize the connector itself is only as good as the strip job you did before you clamped it shut. Wire taps, fuse taps, pigtails, and adapters are the unglamorous parts of a lighting install, but they are usually the difference between a clean one-hour job and a comeback repair three weeks later. If you are wiring up a grille light bar, fixing hyper flash on new LED turn signals with Morimoto resistors, or running power to accent lighting, the right tap and the right prep matter more than the brand name on the bag.
Field-tested detail: dual HD T-Taps have small tap channels, and when we swapped a sold-out 9006 pigtail kit for two smaller kits each paired with a dual T-tap, the wire would not seat until the insulation was stripped back first. Some 18 gauge wiring has extra-thick insulation and is notorious for this. Strip it short before you clamp, not after it fails a bench test. And a tip from the field: use dielectric grease so moisture never reaches the metal in the tap.
Watch how a wire tap gets clamped onto a factory accessory circuit for a grille bar install, plus the fuse tap alternative using a 10 amp accessory fuse under the hood if you would rather not touch the harness wire at all. Once the power side is sorted, a lot of builds move straight into trim work, so if you are finishing out the look check our LED styling accessories for the rest of the install.
That said, not every tap fits every wire. Boost Bar harnesses run roughly 18-22 AWG and ship with a wire tap already included, while the HD T-Tap connectors here are built for 24-18 gauge 12V circuits only, nothing amplifier-duty. So before you grab a handful of taps off the shelf, check the gauge printed on your harness against what the connector is rated for. Bottom line: match the tap to the wire, strip what needs stripping, and the connection will outlast the vehicle.
