Projector Headlamps for Retrofitting: Get the Fit Right
Most people assume a projector is a projector, drop one in, and the beam just works. That is the myth that gets people stuck halfway through a headlight teardown. Lens size, bulb type, and housing depth all have to line up before you ever pick a shroud or wire a driver, which means the right retrofit projector depends on what is already inside your headlight, not what looked good in a video.
From our own build threads: when a customer posted photos looking for a retrofit recommendation, our team steered him away from the 2.5 inch Mini H1 and toward the larger D2S 5.0 or MLED 2. The Mini H1 simply looked undersized once mounted inside a full-size housing. That is why the 3 inch projectors tend to get the nod on bigger trucks and SUVs, they fill the housing with more presence and a wider beam.

Halogen, HID, or LED: what actually changes inside the housing
A halogen projector is the simplest and the dimmest of the three. HID projectors, like the Mini D2S platform, use a standard D2S xenon bulb and ballast to push more usable light with a tight, well-defined cutoff, and that industry-standard bulb means you can source it from Morimoto, Osram, or Philips. LED projectors are newer to the retrofit world and skip the ballast entirely, so install is faster and output is instant with no warm-up lag. The M LED 2.0, for example, runs a 6300K light source at 29.5w and 70,000cd. Even so, purists will tell you LED projectors trade a little distance throw for simplicity, and that is a fair trade for a lot of daily drivers.
2.5 inch or 3 inch: match the lens to your housing
Housing depth and reflector bowl size decide this one more than personal preference does. A 2.5 inch lens, like the Mini H1 platform, fits tighter housings and smaller factory openings; that kit calls for a minimum housing depth of 115mm. A 3 inch lens, like the Mini D2S or the M LED 2.0, needs more depth but rewards you with a bigger, more filled-in look, which is why it shows up so often on full-size trucks like the F-150. That said, going bigger only helps if your housing has the depth to clear it, so measure before you buy rather than after.
Here is the catch with universal kits: fitment language like "little to no mods required" for H4 fog lights versus "mods required" for H1, H7, H11, H13, 9005, 9006, and 9007 housings is not fine print, it is the difference between a weekend install and a much longer one. Pull your headlight, confirm your bulb size and housing depth, then match the projector to that number instead of the other way around.
Once the projector is chosen, the trim ring and finish still matter for a factory-look install.
